The magnetic lashes have tiny magnets on their base, which lock onto the magnetic eyeliner, keeping your lashes in place throughout the day. The little lash magnet on each section sticks to the liner. This eliminates the need for adhesive glue, which can be harsh on the eyes or difficult to use for beginners.

 I truly believe that magnetic lashes are easier than the adhesive type, and that the magnetic eyeliner is much safer for your natural eyelashes!

(There’s another type of magnetic lashes, where you put a section of lash above your natural lashes and a section below, and the micro magnets hold them in place. I don’t recommend these because they’re bad for your natural lashes!)

For me personally, magnetic eyelashes are not for everyday wear (mostly because my high school teaching day starts too early!). I stick to special occasions. But for the everyday girlies, magnetic liner doesn’t take much longer than your waterproof mascara would. And for my fellow special event only type girls, I can vouch for the magnetic fake lashes sticking around through even the sweatiest wedding party.

I also find that the magnetic type lashes last a lot longer than the adhesive type. (maybe I just never got good enough at applying the lash glue, but I feel like they get gummy eventually.)

Okay I NEED to tell this unrelated story first.

I had to get an MRI about a year ago (everything was fine!) and there was an enormous sign in the women’s changing room that just said “REMOVE ALL FALSE LASHES”. And I thought, that’s weird. 

And then I went to put my stuff in a locker….and there was another sign that said, “MAGNETIC LASHES ARE DANGEROUS IN THE MRI”. So I spent the whole appointment trying not to giggle at the thought of someone’s falsies flying off in the MRI tube.

But anyway: magnetic eyeliner is generally safe for use, but like any cosmetic product, there are certain precautions you should take. Here are some tips to ensure you’re using magnetic eyeliner safely:

1. Test for Allergies: Always perform a patch test before using any new eyeliner or remover. Apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist or behind your ear and wait 24 hours. If no irritation occurs, it’s likely safe for use on your eyelids.  (If you’re prone to allergies or have sensitive eyes, you might want to do a second test on the outer corner of your eye, just one side. Let that sit for a day before doing a full lash line.)
2. Avoid the Waterline: Magnetic eyeliner should only be applied to the lash line, not the waterline (the inner edge of your eyelid). The waterline is more sensitive, and applying magnetic eyeliner there could cause irritation or block the oil glands, leading to dryness or infection. Normal eyeliner is okay in the waterline — magnetic liquid eyeliner is not. 
3. Use Gentle Pressure: When removing magnetic eyeliner, avoid rubbing or tugging at the skin. Gentle motions are key to protecting your delicate eye area.
4. Clean Lashes Properly: If you use reusable magnetic lashes, make sure to clean them after each use. Gently wipe the magnets with a soft cloth and avoid getting the lashes wet to maintain their shape and effectiveness.

Finding the right makeup remover is essential for keeping your skin healthy and your lashes intact. Makeup wipes generally are not going to get the job done. Here are some of the best makeup remover for magnetic eyeliner options:

• Oil-Based Makeup Removers: Products like Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water In Oil are excellent choices for breaking down magnetic eyeliner. The oil component gently dissolves the iron particles, while the water phase lifts away residue without needing to rub too hard. These options are affordable and in most drugstores. Oil-free makeup remover may not have the same power!

• Cleansing Balms: Cleansing balms, such as Farmacy Green Clean, are also highly effective. These balms melt upon contact with the skin, breaking down the eyeliner and leaving the skin hydrated. They’re a great choice for people with sensitive skin or dry patches around the eyes. They’re still basically an oil-based makeup remover. 

• Coconut Oil or Jojoba Oil: If you prefer a natural approach, oils like coconut or jojoba oil can be highly effective at dissolving magnetic eyeliner. Simply apply a small amount to a cotton pad and press it onto the eyelid for a few seconds before wiping away. These oils not only break down the makeup but also nourish the skin and lashes. Any excess oil can be removed with your usual cleanser (I use Byoma!).

• Micellar Water: For a lightweight option, try micellar water designed for waterproof makeup. Bioderma Sensibio H2O is a popular micellar water that works gently to remove magnetic eyeliner without irritating the eyes. It’s a good choice if you want to avoid using oils or balms. 

• If you really want a specific eye makeup remover instead of an oil, Neutrogena Eye Makeup Remover Oil-Free might be your best bet. I’m gonna be honest, though: I’ve never had much luck with this. 

Eyelash Health Tips When Using Magnetic Eyeliner

Magnetic eyeliner and lashes can be a great way to get dramatic eyes without damaging your natural lashes. However, it’s important to take extra steps to maintain your lash health.
