Sometimes there are just things that have to change.
When you can’t go on anymore with the way things are, it’s time to change your life. And affirmations can be a great foundation for when change seems impossible.
I truly believe that affirmations change your life even when it feels like nothing else can! Affirmations can change your mindset, and everything that you do and think is influencing your reality. So, even if you can’t change everything all at once, affirmations can help lay the groundwork for you to change your life.
How do affirmations change your life?
People are so quick to brush off affirmations!
Some people who aren’t really into the woo stuff say it can’t possibly work the way that we say it does.
And some people who are into it are more interested in dramatic manifestation work. (And I love manifestation and write about it a lot! But sometimes it’s best to get back to basics.)
But the truth is: affirmation changes your subconscious. (With my teenage students, I call this our ‘lizard brain’!) Your lizard brain is the part of you that’s thinking when you’re not watching yourself. That is, when you’re not thinking about thinking, your brain is still going in the background, using the assumptions that you’ve always made.
And for a lot of us, the assumptions that we’ve always made aren’t leading us to happiness.
If you’re feeling stuck and you’re desperate to change your life, affirmations are part of that. They can help you change the mindset that is keeping you unhappy.
If you tend to assume that people don’t like you, or that they’re talking badly about you — that might be stuck in your lizard brain from middle school. But you’re not in middle school anymore! And affirmations can help you change your mindset.
My affirmations story
Similarly: if you struggle to feel that it’s possible for you to be happy, you got that assumption from somewhere. For me, I grew up in an alcoholic household, where I “learned” that some problems are not fixable and all you can do is cope (with alcohol). I believed this, truly, for thirty years. I never questioned it.
Affirmations were part of challenging this belief. The one that stands out in my memory (because I wrote it everywhere and considered getting it as a tattoo) was “I am creating a life that I love living”.
It worked.
Is my life perfect today? Of course not. I have problems and bad days. I struggle to manage stress and responsibilities. But, what has changed is my belief that I have the power to change my situation, and that there’s nothing that I have to just put up with if it’s not serving me. I don’t believe I need to numb myself to something that’s hurting me.
The affirmations didn’t do it all. But they pumped me up to take action and make things better. More importantly: they changed my mindset to a point where I believed that it was possible to make things better!
So if you feel stuck today, that doesn’t mean you’re going to be stuck forever. Affirmations and a little bit of courage will change your life.
Benefits of Affirmations to Change Your Life
Affirmations are more than just words; they are powerful tools for creating a positive mindset and fostering personal growth. By repeating positive statements daily, you can reduce negative self-talk and focus on the good things in life. The power of affirmations lies in their ability to reshape your neural pathways, helping you form new habits and think in a positive way.
The word affirmation comes from the Latin affirmare, meaning to strengthen or make steady. When used in a daily routine, affirmation statements can create a sense of purpose and lead to a positive life. They are a great way to develop an attitude of gratitude, embrace the present moment, and make better decisions.
With daily affirmations into your life, you can experience less stress, improved mental health, and more positive thoughts. It’s
Whether it’s your first time using affirmations or you’re building on a daily practice, they hold great value for anyone seeking positive change.
Affirmations Can Change Your Life Quickly
The brain’s ability to adapt to new statements is remarkable. By focusing on the right words, you can replace negative thoughts with a positive perspective. Morning affirmations are especially effective because they set the tone for a new day. Starting your day with an affirmation like “I am worthy of love” can help you embrace positive thinking and build healthy relationships.
When you commit to affirmations on a daily basis, you’ll notice how your life experience begins to shift. Affirmation statements help you focus on the little things that bring joy, even in different circumstances. They are one of the best ways to counteract a negative statement or bad things that may arise during the day.
Repeating powerful affirmations not only helps rewire your brain but also reinforces the belief that you are capable of achieving positive change. Over time, this daily routine creates a foundation for personal growth and a positive life.
Does this mean that my problems are my fault?
No.
I know this is the issue a lot of people take with manifestation and The Secret and all that.
But a really healthy way to think about responsibility is to decide to take full responsibility for what happens next.
If you were raised, like I was, with the mindset that some problems are just too big to fix, this change is so powerful. I don’t like to call it a “victim mindset”, because I didn’t see myself as any more of a victim than everyone else in the world. It was just the belief that large parts of life are going to suck, and there isn’t much you can do about it.
Now, I approach my life with the knowledge that I have power and I have choices. And sometimes, I need to use my power to fix or improve a situation, and sometimes I need to use my choices to walk away from a situation. What I don’t have is the rest of my life to spend in a crappy situation.
And maybe you don’t have choices yet. If you can’t afford to leave your job, you don’t really have the choice yet, and you can’t walk in and say, I quit!. But you ask yourself today, what step can I take today towards improving this job or getting a new one?
Taking responsibility for your life can seem really scary at first. But it’s the most empowering thing you can do for yourself.
