I think probably my favorite type of product to review is sunscreen!

And I had been seeing this brand, Everyday Humans, pop up lately on social media in those ‘get ready with me’ skincare routine type posts. I’m always interested in any product that says it’s for sensitive skin, so I figured I’d test the brand out! Here’s my Everyday Humans sunscreen review.

Everyday Humans Oh My Bod

So, I opted for their Oh My Bod SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion product. It’s their body sunscreen! The trendier option seems to be the Everyday Humans Resting Beach Face SPF 30! But I generally prefer SPF 50 unless it’s raining! Because I’m managing existing sun damage, an SPF 30 sun serum doesn’t work for me. It might well work for you though!

So, Oh My Bod seems like it’s going to be an SPF 50 body lotion only from the name, but the advertisements do specify it as “Premium Face and Body SPF”. So I figured this one was more likely to meet my needs. And since it has skincare-y ingredients like hyaluronic acid and green tea, I figured it would work fine for my face. I don’t tend to see too much irritation, even when I use less chemically elegant body sunscreens on my face!

I did patch test this product on my jaw because I sometimes react to products with fragrance, but there was no irritation after three days so I went for it!

Application and feel – Everyday Humans sunscreen review

First, what everybody always wants to know: no white cast on me. (I’m a Fitzpatrick scale 2, so light but not super light white skin.) I’m usually pretty reluctant to say “no white cast!” because I knwo that people with deeper skin tones than me might have a different experience. But in this case, Consumer Reports and Good Housekeeping also said there’s no white cast, so I feel okay saying it this time! The lotion comes out of the plastic tube white but dissolves quickly.

Texture

The texture is very much lotion-y and feels more like face lotion than body lotion, which I like! I hate when I’ve done a whole hydrating skincare routine and then my last step is to apply some super drying sunscreen. The reviews online seems to be mixed on the texture–some reviews say it looks like oily skin. I am not getting that — I would call it a sheen? Like, it’s not matte or dewy, but I wouldn’t go as far as oily.

I also think the shine is pretty friendly/forgiving. I’m in my late thirties with some skin texture issues starting to set in, and I feel like the sheen on this product glosses over small imperfections. Not as much so as a makeup primer would, but I think that if you’re going out sunscreen-only, this is a good product to select.

I tried really hard to get a video of the finish! Here’s my best shot:

And finally: there is a fragrance. I know that for a lot us, we haven’t had the best experience with fragrance in a product like this! I’ve got rosacea, and fragrance is sometimes an issue for me, but I didn’t react to this one at all. I’d call this fragrance earthy. The brand notes it as ‘cucumber and green tea with a hint of apple’. I would not call it a strong or lasting fragrance; you smell it when you’re applying the product, and it covers that sun screen serum smell. But you don’t really smell it on the skin afterwards. The packaging doesn’t note any synthetic fragrance added.

SPF and filters

So, this is not a reef-safe sunscreen. If you’re going in the ocean, you don’t want a product with avobenzone in it. I know this is not a priority for everyone, but it’s worth prioritizing if you’re regularly in the ocean!

As sunscreen actives go, this is a pretty effective broad spectrum SPF if your priority is no white cast. You’re going to get a very effective protection from UVB rays here, and moderate UVA protection. I wrote more about this in my post about UVA sunscreens, but basically if you live in the United States, you’re limited to mineral sunscreen if you want total UVA protection.

So, unless they someday approve for us the filters that the rest of the world uses, we’re limited to sun screen lotion that either leaves a white cast, or that protects only partially against UVA rays.

Most people do seem to opt for a product like this — a pretty good blend of chemical sunscreens that are going to be wearable every day. This product is going to work on most skin types and tones, it’s a pleasantly non-sticky SPF, and it’s easy to use on a daily basis. The best sun protection is the one that you are going to use every time you have sun exposure, and for most people that means a good-enough product. If you have a bottle of mineral sunscreen that you wear infrequently, a sunscreen serum like this one may be the best potion for you.
